NYC Starting Up is a social platform and nonprofit organization that tackles the needs of our City by harnessing the creative and diverse forces of our own residents.
Our City has a history of becoming overly reliant on outside factors including Federal funding, only to experience harsh consequences when those factors have been removed.
However, we remain among the greatest and most diverse cities in the world.
And with so much of this diversity and our creativity still untapped, we firmly believe that our best days are yet to come and that our residents are up to the task of meeting the daunting challenges we currently face.
PROVIDING A PLATFORM
For this reason, we provide a platform through which various initiatives can be pursued and where various stakeholders and passionate professionals, students and entrepreneurs can gather to work together.
YOUTH PIPELINE PROGRAM
Our Youth and Young Adult Pipeline Program recognizes that pathways to the various high-skilled jobs that can be found in our City have largely been blocked to our own young people and seeks to remedy this fundamental deficiency.
NEW ECONOMY INITIATIVES
The history of the tech industry in our City is still relatively short and there are many areas within tech, our City’s workforce and the larger economy that we feel do not receive enough attention.
Utilizing our platform model, our Innovation Labs seek to change this situation by gathering talented and diverse individuals and forming them into teams that focus on needed areas to ensure that our City does not fall behind.
NYC’S COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGES
Although we might have gotten started later than Silicon Valley or Route 128 in Massachusetts, as the word’s most significant city, we have so many unique advantages to work with as we move into the future.
Connecting our Startup ecosystem to these unique advantages with surgical precision is also a focus included in our efforts.
THE NATURE OF OUR ADAPTIVE CAPACITY
Along with unique advantages, also comes the totality of our shared history and culture – the good, the bad and everything in between.
Fostering relationships between local institutions, industrial structures and corporate entities is critically important to the continuing evolution of our City and region.
BEST PRACTICES & THE BEST WAY FORWARD
By way of comparison, the City of Shenzen continues to experience great momentum utilizing a set of practices and behaviors that some think bear a striking resemblance to those used by Silicon Valley and documented in the book, “Regional Advantage.”
Such and other best practices should be firmly understood by the various entities within the NYC startup ecosystem and applied to their full extent.
